Among the forerunners of The Refugees Project (TRP) were e.g. Niet Opnieuw (Never Again ; a school year long project remembrance education in the general tracks of the Flemish educational system) and De mobiele school (The mobile school), a GIP or Integrated test in the professional or vocational tracks. On the basis of this in Flanders already well-established and effective GIP didactical model for trans-course learning, we would undertake TRP at the public school of Oudenaarde in the year 2007-2008 to finalize and test the pedagogy and didactics of WELT. To later transmit what we did, TRP was filmed and would be described in a book. It won the prize for Best World Citizenship Project (Kleur Bekennen, a well-known government program for world citizenship education in Belgium) and the National Art Award (School Without Racism).
Two years later a second trajectory would be undertaken at the same school on ethnic nationalism and the first versions of the theory would find their way to School Without Racism, where they inspired a new orientation towards world-citizenship education. TRP became the most cited good practice in Wereldwonderwijs, the Kleur Bekennen didactic manual. And via workshops and speeches also colleges with a teacher training got informed.
After this dissemination and the feedback that followed, we wrote the book for teacher trainings Jongeren worden wereldburgers, published in 2014, in which both the WELT model and TRP are described in the finest detail. Next new thing became this website in 2016, thanks to Maaki Production. Since 2019 WELT, thanks to the Cell Active Citizenship and its coördinator Jeroen Lauwers, became official policy in the Antwerp city educational system and forms the basis of the course World-Citizenship for all secondary teacher training programs at Artesis Plantin College, where student-teams prepare full scale WELT projects that can be introduced in the field. This way WELT build the necessary bridge between secondary and higher education, and now also represents an approach to the modernisation of secondary education (transversal competences) going on in the EU. Also the WELT “Youth City Hall” pilot-project for the last years in secondary education, combining three projects in three schools, is being undertaken in the same city system. The film and book of that project will hopefully help further upscale the method and pedagogy.
But thanks to the film, the photo coverage and the book of the original The Refugees Project we can already illustrate every phase and part of a WELT trajectory. We selected quite some text from the syllabus (about a quarter in total) to illustrate the most important parts.
